Kevin Nealon isn't the type who goes for cheap applause with a dirty joke. His style is built on an almost pathological deadpan that he perfected in Los Angeles clubs in the early eighties. In 1984 he debuted on The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson, and that night changed his bank account. But the real breakthrough came two years later, when he joined the cast of Saturday Night Live.
And the gamble paid off.
He spent nine seasons on the NBC show (1986-1995) without raising his voice more than necessary. His character, the Subliminal Man, caught on because it reflected the hypocrisy of advertising at the time. Nealon anchored Weekend Update for three years and avoided the over-the-top parody that some of his castmates preferred.
In 1995 he decided his time at Rockefeller Center was over. It wasn't a traumatic exit, but it was necessary to try his luck in mainstream movies with the help of his friends. He appeared in Happy Gilmore in 1996 and in The Wedding Singer in 1998, because his chemistry with Adam Sandler guaranteed box office and dry laughs.
Unlike other comics who fade away after leaving live television, Nealon found a comfortable home on cable. In 2005 he accepted the role of Doug Wilson in the series Weeds. He played a corrupt, drug-addicted city councilman for eight full seasons, until 2012.
That character let him explore a darker, more pathetic side that audiences didn't know. Because Nealon knows that a good supporting actor shouldn't steal the scene but make the lead shine even brighter. He received two Screen Actors Guild nominations for this work in 2007 and 2009.
It wasn't all smooth sailing in the industry.
In 2016 he joined the sitcom Man with a Plan alongside Matt LeBlanc. The series stayed on the air until 2020, but critics were never especially kind to the traditional format of laugh tracks. Even so, the actor kept his screen time thanks to a contract that guaranteed his presence in every episode produced.
Away from the Hollywood spotlight, the actor has developed a caricaturist side that few suspected during his TV heyday. In 2022, he published the book I Exaggerate: My Brushes with Fame. The book mixes anecdotes from his film sets with portraits he drew himself of figures such as Robin Williams and Eddie Vedder.
In 2017 he launched Hiking with Kevin on digital platforms. It's a simple format in which he interviews celebrities as they climb hills in California. The recording gear consists solely of a selfie stick and the labored breathing of guests trying to keep up with his physical and verbal pace.
Nealon turned 70 in 2023 and continues to keep a busy schedule of live performances across the United States. On December 15, 2022, Abrams ComicArts released the first edition of his art book at a starting price of $29.99. In 2024, he lent his voice to an animated project that is still in technical post-production.
