Kim Myung-min came close to boarding a plane and never returning to a film set. In 2004, the actor planned to move to New Zealand, fed up with precarious work and with playing roles nobody remembered. He had no connections and no look that fit the beauty standards dominating Seoul's industry.
And then his luck suddenly changed.
The production of Immortal Admiral Yi Sun-sin was looking for a face that could convey authority and pain in equal measure. Kim immersed himself in studying the life of the national hero, and the result was a performance that captivated South Korea for months. That role earned him his first Daesang and erased any trace of anonymity from his career.
In 2009, the actor decided to push his professional commitment to a limit that was dangerous for his health. To play a man with ALS in Closer to Heaven, he lost twenty kilograms in record time. The process was so aggressive that doctors warned him about possible permanent damage to his metabolism.
But he chose to keep going.
Photos from the set show a skeletal man who could barely stand between takes. This obsession with detail earned him critical respect and the Best Actor award at that year's Blue Dragon Film Awards. His weight dropped to 52 kilograms during the final weeks of production on the feature film.
In 2011, the actor tried his hand at period comedy in Detective K: Secret of the Virtuous Widow. The film was an unexpected box office hit that spawned two sequels in 2015 and 2018. But his true strength lies in roles that demand grueling technical preparation.
In 2008, he brought Kang Mae to life in Beethoven Virus and created a character that is still studied in Korean acting schools today. The conductor was an arrogant, brilliant man who spoke with a perfect military cadence. Kim spent months learning to conduct a real orchestra so he wouldn't have to use hand doubles.
That way of projecting the voice became their signature.
Because Kim Myung-min doesn't act with just their face. In 2021, they brought back that aura of intellectual superiority in Law School, playing a relentless law professor. The series performed well on global streaming platforms and showed that their ability to memorize technical dialogue has no rival in the Korean industry.
In 2024, he returned to television with Your Honor, playing a judge who must protect his son after a fatal accident. The project is an adaptation of the Israeli series Kvodo and required him to work in a much more restrained, suffocating register. Production was filmed under strict confidentiality measures to prevent script leaks before the premiere.
The series had a production budget that exceeded 15,000 million won.
The actor signed his participation contract after reading only the first two episodes of the original script. He keeps his residence in Seoul and continues to turn down roles that don't require him to learn a new technical or physical skill. Filming for his latest drama officially wrapped in May 2024.
