From Alabama to the New York Stage

Laverne Cox grew up in Mobile, Alabama, under the weight of hostility that only dance could ease. Her childhood was marked by bullying and strict discipline in ballet classes. But that oppressive environment didn't stop her from moving to New York to study at Marymount Manhattan College.

For years, she performed off-Broadway while working in cafés across the Big Apple. She appeared in reality TV shows like I Want to Work for Diddy in 2008 because she needed visibility. No one handed her a place in the American film industry.

That phase of survival shaped her character.

In 2013, her life changed when she landed the role of Sophia Burset in Orange Is the New Black. The Netflix series needed a trans woman to play an inmate with a complicated family history. Cox seized the opportunity to build a human character who avoided the usual tropes of gratuitous suffering.

Her twin brother, M. Lamar, played her character in the scenes showing her past before transition. This casting decision brought a visual truth that American critics applauded enthusiastically. In 2014, she received her first Emmy nomination, becoming the first trans person eligible for this award in acting categories.

Production as a Trench

Cox soon realized that acting alone wasn't enough to change the power dynamics in Hollywood. So she decided to move into executive producing to control the story from the ground up. In 2014, she released the documentary The T Word and won a Daytime Emmy for her producing work.

Her biggest effort in this field came in 2020 with the documentary Disclosure. The film surgically examines how cinema has portrayed trans people for a century. But it doesn't take a victim's stance; instead, it offers a technical analysis of the framing and scripts used by the industry.

Money doesn't always buy respect.

In 2017, she tried to make the leap to broadcast television with the series Doubt. She played a brilliant lawyer, but CBS canceled the show after airing only two episodes due to low ratings. It was a hard blow that forced her to rethink her strategy with major studios.

Despite the setback, she took part in more independent projects. In 2020, she worked on Promising Young Woman under the direction of Emerald Fennell. In this film, she played Gail and showed she could handle sharp dialogue in a revenge thriller that went on to win an Oscar for Best Original Screenplay.

The Rigor of the Red Carpet

In 2022, she took on a supporting but key role in the miniseries Inventing Anna by Shonda Rhimes. She played Kacy Duke, a celebrity trainer based on a real person. To prepare for the role, she spent weeks studying the real Duke's movements and tone of voice, since she was aiming for an almost documentary-level precision.

And the gamble paid off.

That same year, E! hired her as the official host of its red carpet coverage. Cox went from being the interviewee to controlling the pace of communication at the industry's biggest events. In 2024, she filmed the Netflix movie Uglies, a dystopian sci-fi project that demanded a significant physical effort.

In 2025, her contract with E! was renewed with an exclusivity clause that prevents her from appearing on rival talk shows. The agreement includes travel and per diem compensation of up to twelve thousand dollars for each major event.
