Linda Hamilton did not seek fame in Hollywood. Early on in Maryland, she only thought about theater and looked down on the camera, which she saw as a lesser medium. But money was tight, and by the late seventies she ended up accepting supporting roles in television productions.
In 1984, she agreed to star in a B-movie directed by a little-known Canadian filmmaker. It was called The Terminator. The shoot was chaotic, and Hamilton sprained her ankle before filming the chase scenes. No one expected that a six-million-dollar project would change the course of action cinema.
And the phone didn't stop ringing.
Between 1987 and 1990, she starred in the series Beauty and the Beast. It earned her two Golden Globe nominations and a steady paycheck that let her choose her projects more carefully. But audiences still saw her as the frightened waitress from Los Angeles.
In 1991, she returned for the sequel after thirteen weeks of military training. She learned to assemble and disassemble weapons with her eyes closed and cut almost all the body fat from her frame. Hamilton insisted that her character be a woman hardened by trauma, not a mere sidekick to the hero.
Her relationship with James Cameron went from the set to the courtroom in no time. They married in 1997, and the divorce came just two years later. Hamilton received 50 million dollars in the legal settlement. It was a period of media silence in which she preferred to step away from big productions and red carpets.
The industry often punishes honesty.
In 2005, she decided to speak publicly about her bipolar disorder. For years she had suffered episodes that affected her marriages and her ability to work consistently. That confession was a turning point in her private life, but it kept her away from major studios for nearly a decade.
In 2019, she worked with Arnold Schwarzenegger again in Terminator: Dark Fate. She was 62 years old and followed a strict no-carb diet for a full year to get back the fitness she had in the nineties. The film grossed 261 million dollars, but box office results did not meet the studio's expectations.
She joined the cast of Resident Alien in 2021, playing General McCallister. In 2024, her casting in the fifth season of Stranger Things for Netflix was confirmed. Filming of these final episodes stretched across much of 2025 due to the technical complexity of the action sequences.
The production of the series employed more than a thousand workers in the state of Georgia.
