Madylin Sweeten was five years old when she first walked onto the Barones' set. She was 1996, and American television was looking for a family that wasn't perfect but worked through the sarcasm of Ray Romano. She landed the role of Ally right away.
That contract lasted nine seasons.
For nearly a decade, the actress grew up in front of millions of viewers who saw her as the responsible older sister. But behind the scenes of Everybody Loves Raymond, her days were a strict routine of scripts and school tutors. She worked alongside her twin brothers in real life, and that created a protective dynamic that carried over onto screen across 210 episodes.
It's not easy to leave a global hit series without being typecast. Sweeten wrapped the sitcom in 2005 and decided her path didn't lead through major Hollywood productions. In 2008 she appeared in the thriller Eagle Eye in a smaller role, because she needed to distance herself from her sitcom-kid image.
And the bet paid off creatively.
In 2015 her brother Sawyer Sweeten died by suicide in Texas. That loss put any professional plans on hold and forced her to rethink her relationship with fame. It was a process of personal rebuilding away from the tabloids, in which she prioritized the mental health of her family over television contracts.
Maturity led her to seek control from behind the camera. By 2014 she had already started experimenting with production on the short Wedding Frisk, where she also acted. She moved to Los Angeles to study and focus on projects where she could have her own voice.
Because the industry rarely forgives child stars who don't have a solid Plan B.
Sweeten founded her own production company and joined the independent theater scene in California. In 2017 she was part of the cast of the film Catalina Islands, and a year later she married actor Sean Durrie. Her work shifted toward writing and set design on low-budget productions.
In 2019 she appeared in the short film Choice, directed by Robin Bain, with a budget under 50,000 dollars.
