Maggie Civantos arrived in Madrid with a technical training that few people recognized in her early casting years. In 2015, the industry was looking for more conventional, mainstream profiles, but she decided to audition for a prison drama that raised many doubts among TV executives. That audition for the role of Macarena Ferreiro in Vis a Vis radically changed the course of her career.
And the risk was worth it.
Before stepping onto the set of Cruz del Sur, she worked in supporting roles in shows such as Scenes from a Marriage or Hospital Central. But in the fictional prison she found the space to develop a dramatic restraint that broke away from the stereotypes of the era. The series earned absolute audience loyalty that catapulted her to the front ranks of Spanish screen acting without going through the usual tabloid toll booths.
She was born in 1984 into a family where art was not a distant option but everyday language. Her mother was a singer and her father a musician, so rhythm came with her from the cradle. She studied at the Superior School of Dramatic Arts in Málaga, where she learned that technique is the only valid safety net when talent falters.
For years, she alternated between theater and short films that barely got any commercial distribution.
In 2017, she joined the cast of Las chicas del cable to play Ángeles Vidal. It was Netflix's first original production in Spain, and that contract brought massive international exposure that forced her to manage fame with almost surgical distance. But Maggie Civantos was not content to wait for her agent's phone to ring.
In 2021, she founded her own production company, Bastarda Films.
She made this decision to have full control over the stories she wanted to tell, because the industry sometimes forgets that actors also have business vision. Not all of her projects sought easy critical praise. In 2019 she starred in Malaka, playing Blanca Gámez in a gritty, realistic thriller filmed in her hometown of Málaga. The series demanded a physical and emotional toughness that broke away from the sophisticated image she had projected in her other work.
Film has also been a constant refuge for testing her strength outside the episodic format. In 2019, she shot Antes de la quema under the direction of Fernando Colomo, and in 2020 she took part in El inconveniente. These films showed that her gift for bittersweet comedy was as solid as her command of prison drama.
Her investment in producing her own projects kept growing.
In 2024, she took part in the Argentine action film Checkmate and premiered the series La pasión turca. By 2025, she has planned the release of several projects in which she works as executive producer and script supervisor. The investment figure for her latest international co-production in 2024 reached five million euros.
