At six years old, McKenna Roberts already knew what it meant to work under the pressure of a professional film set. Her entry into the series The Young and the Restless in 2013 was no accident of fate. The industry was looking for child performers able to keep up with the pace of a daily production, and she met that requirement for four consecutive years.
Playing Matilda Ashby gave her a solid technical foundation in the craft. American soap operas leave no time for personal flourishes or endless retakes. You arrive with your lines memorized and shoot on the first take. That survival school of acting shaped her ability to retain complex dialogue before she turned ten.
And the effort paid off.
In 2017, she decided her time in daytime television was over. Roberts sought projects with different shooting schedules and a more cinematic storytelling style. But moving from niche television to big-budget film is usually a slow process that requires patience and smart casting choices in Los Angeles.
Her real break came in 2018 with the release of Skyscraper. Sharing the screen with a star of Dwayne Johnson’s magnitude usually overshadows younger actors, who end up reduced to mere decorative elements in the plot. Roberts managed to give her character a real presence amid the explosions and digital effects.
That film grossed more than three hundred million dollars at the global box office and put her name on the radar of the most influential casting directors. She was no longer just a girl who could sit still in front of the camera. She was an actress capable of carrying emotional tension in a live-action blockbuster.
The market has changed, and so has she.
In 2019, the series Euphoria called her for a different challenge. Playing the younger version of Rue, Zendaya's character, required a dramatic weight unlike anything in her previous work. Roberts had to convey the source of the trauma and the protagonist's confusion in just a few brief but visually intense scenes.
Her transition to more adult roles was confirmed in 2022 with her participation in Babylon. Working under Damien Chazelle means submitting to an obsessive and nuanced artistic vision. In a film that portrays the excesses and decadence of classic Hollywood, her presence brought a necessary counterpoint of restraint that balanced the story.
But an actress's growth in this industry doesn't depend only on big names. Roberts has balanced these film appearances with voice work and streaming projects that keep her visible without overexposing her image. Her strategy is based on surgical selection of scripts rather than piling up forgettable credits.
Not everything has been a commercial success.
In 2024, she got involved in independent productions that aimed to explore genres far from the usual commercial circuit. These projects often have limited distribution (frequently going straight to digital platforms), but they help her test acting styles that action films don't allow her to develop. Roberts would rather risk failure than stagnate in flat roles.
In 2025, her schedule was filled with two contracts for fantasy productions with a combined budget of sixty million dollars. Filming for these movies took place in Eastern European locations under strict confidentiality clauses that prevent revealing plot details until release day. That's how the new studio system works.
