Olivia Jane Cockburn decided she would go by Wilde in high school. She wanted to pay tribute to Oscar Wilde, but also to draw a clear line between herself and her family of elite journalists. She grew up in Washington surrounded by intellectuals and war correspondents.
That decision was the first script of her life.
In 2003 she landed a role on the series Skin. The project was short-lived, but it helped her break into the Los Angeles scene. Shortly after came The O.C., and her role as Alex Kelly broke the mold for teen television of the era.
But her big breakthrough into millions of homes came in 2007. She put on the lab coat of Dr. Remy Hadley in House, where fans knew her as Thirteen. For five seasons, she held her own acting opposite Hugh Laurie and became an unavoidable face in the industry.
Hollywood tried to pigeonhole her into the role of action heroine or love interest. In 2010, she starred in TRON: Legacy. It was a $170 million production that performed well at the box office but didn't give her the creative space she was looking for.
She kept building up credits in Cowboys & Aliens in 2011 and in the futuristic In Time. She worked nonstop. But she felt her place was behind the camera, watching the set from a different angle.
In 2011 she produced her first short documentary, Sun City Picture House, about rebuilding a movie theater in Haiti. It marked the start of a quiet shift toward producing and commercial directing.
Total control was the goal.
Before her big break, she worked on prestige projects such as Her in 2013 and the HBO series Vinyl in 2016. These experiences let her closely observe the style of directors like Spike Jonze and Martin Scorsese.
No one expected her directing debut to be such a sharp teen comedy. In 2019, she released Booksmart. Critics raved about its pacing and the chemistry between its leads. The film grossed $25 million despite competing with huge superhero releases.
That success gave her the clout to bring Don't Worry Darling to the screen in 2022. The shoot was surrounded by media noise unrelated to the script. But the technical reality is that the film showcased a highly refined visual aesthetic and an obsessive art direction.
Sometimes outside noise drowns out the editing work.
In 2023, her role in the thriller Alpha Gang was confirmed. She doesn't slow down. Her production company looks for projects that break away from the conventional narrative structures of the major studios. And it finds them.
By 2024, she closed a deal to direct an adaptation of Avengelyne, produced by Margot Robbie. It's a fantasy project based on 1990s comic book characters. The estimated budget for this kind of production often exceeds $100 million.
