Reba Nell McEntire was born in 1955 surrounded by horses and mud in Chockie, Oklahoma. Her father was a rodeo champion, and she learned to sing in the car as the family traveled from one competition to another across the country. In 1974 she sang the national anthem at the National Finals Rodeo in Oklahoma City. That day, the artist Red Steagall heard her and decided that voice belonged in Nashville.
And the gamble paid off.
The early years in the music industry were slow and difficult. Her first contract with Mercury Records brought no immediate rewards, but she insisted on controlling her own sound. In 1984 she released My Kind of Country, and the market realized McEntire was no passing fad. That album revived traditional country at a time when pop dominated the radio in Tennessee.
In 1991, a plane crash claimed the lives of nearly her entire band. It was the hardest blow of her private life. McEntire coped with her grief by working and dedicated her album For My Broken Heart to her late bandmates. That record sold four million copies in the United States alone and changed the way she understood the show business.
By the late eighties she already dominated the sales charts. But McEntire wanted more than catchy choruses and endless tours. In 1990 she accepted a supporting role in Tremors, a movie about giant worms in the desert. Nobody expected a country star to handle a rifle so naturally alongside Kevin Bacon.
That shoot was the first step in an expansion that would take her well beyond the music stage. Reba understood early on that entertainment is a business that demands constant visibility. In 2001 she made her definitive breakthrough with the series Reba on the WB network.
Critics doubted her ability to handle classic sitcom comedy. But the series lasted six seasons and 127 episodes, drawing millions of viewers with every broadcast. Her salary per episode reached 100,000 dollars in the final stages of production.
She never let music take a back seat while filming in Los Angeles.
Her company, Reba's Business Inc, has managed her image rights, her clothing line, and her real estate holdings since 1988. In 2022 she joined the cast of Big Sky to play Sunny Barnes. It was a villainous role with dark nuances that moved away from the funny mother figure audiences remembered from her television years.
In 2023, she took a seat in the coaching chair on The Voice to replace Blake Shelton. Her approach on the show was built on a technical command of live performance that very few artists keep after five decades in the business. In 2024, NBC approved the production of Happy's Place, a comedy in which she plays a woman who inherits her father's restaurant.
McEntire is one of the few artists to have released more than thirty studio albums. She has sold more than 75 million records worldwide and owns the rights to much of her original recordings.
Her estimated net worth of $2024 exceeds $95 million dollars.
