What Makes a Scanner Darkly?

In the near future, the United States has lost the war on drugs. Substance D, a narcotic that causes strange hallucinations, has spread across the country, and police surveillance controls nearly everything. In Orange County, California, an undercover officer receives an uncomfortable order: he must spy on his own friends. Keanu Reeves plays this cop, and Richard Linklater directs a story about identity and deception based on the novel by Philip K. Dick. The protagonist must keep his cover while moving among those around him, caught between duty and loyalty to the people closest to him.

Trivia about A Scanner Darkly

Robert Downey Jr. completely forgot that the scene would be animated later while repeating several takes to get the smoke ring that appears in the foreground of Barris.

Linklater considered Keanu Reeves for the dual roles of Arctor and Fred, although he believed the actor would be reluctant to make another science fiction film after the Matrix trilogy.

The film opened in 17 theaters and grossed 391,672 dollars on its first weekend. In the end, it finished about 1 million dollars short of recouping its 8.7 million production budget.

The soundtrack, which runs over an hour, was composed and recorded over more than a year and a half in Graham Reynolds' bedroom at his home in east Austin. It is not a synthesized score.

Four animation team leads, who had spent six months working on the overall look, received credit for "additional animation."

Robert Downey Jr. wrote most of his lines on sticky notes scattered around the set, and the rotoscoping team removed them during post-production.

Principal photography began on May 17, 2004 and lasted six weeks, while the animation phase that followed took roughly a year and a half.

The film was a finalist for the Hugo Award for Best Dramatic Presentation, Long Form in 2007, after screening at the Cannes and Seattle film festivals in 2006.
