In Pittsburgh, in 1957, Troy Maxson lives with his wife, Rose, and their teenage son, Cory, in a modest house. A former baseball player in the Negro leagues, he now collects garbage alongside his best friend, Jim Bono, with whom he has shared the job for decades. Troy struggles to keep his family together and to make peace with the events of his past, while everyday life demands decisions that don't always match what his loved ones expect from him. Trivia about Fences

According to producer Todd Black, Washington insisted on staying faithful to Wilson's play, because for him the real star of the film was the script and the author's words.

Earlier attempts to bring Fences to the screen fell through, in part because Wilson insisted that the film be directed by an African American director.

The American Film Institute named it one of the ten best films of 2016, an honor it received after its release in the United States.

Its limited release in five theaters in New York and Los Angeles was expected to gross between 50,000 and 75,000 dollars per theater, but it ended up totaling 128,000 dollars overall.

Williamson, Hornsby, and Henderson reprised the roles they had played in the 2010 stage production of the play.

The scene with Viola Davis about their 18 years of marriage required 23 takes during filming, according to the actress in an interview published during the film's promotion.

The film grossed 64,414,761 dollars worldwide on an estimated budget of 24 million, according to the figures recorded for this production.

The awards campaign submitted Viola Davis as a supporting actress, a decision some analysts called "category fraud" and one that Denzel Washington said they did not agree with.
