Tevye is the milkman of a Ukrainian village. He lives happily with his wife and their five daughters, all of them unmarried. One afternoon, while making his deliveries, he meets Perchik, a poor student from Kiev with revolutionary ideals. The two hit it off, and Tevye offers him room and board in exchange for tutoring one of his daughters. At the same time, Lazar Wolf, a rough butcher who has been widowed, asks Tevye for the hand of Tzeitel, his eldest daughter, and Tevye agrees.
