Synopsis of Starsky & Hutch

David Starsky and Kenneth "Hutch" Hutchinson are two plainclothes police detectives patrolling the streets of Bay City, California. Starsky is a stocky brunette, and Hutch is a slim blond who embodies a more intellectual kind of cop. They drive a flashy red Ford Gran Torino with a long white stripe, which Starsky considers his pride and joy, and they respond over the radio to the call sign "Zebra Three." They work under Captain Harold Dobey, and their main goal is to catch the criminals who disrupt life in the city. Outside of work, both have suffered romantic setbacks, so they must balance their personal lives with their investigations. Created by William Blinn, the series airs on ABC and stars David Soul and Paul Michael Glaser.

Trivia about Starsky & Hutch

William Blinn drew inspiration from the success of the then-recent film Busting when creating the series.

The theme song "Gotcha," written by Tom Scott, is the most famous of the series' themes, and musicians such as The Ventures have covered it.

The version of "Gotcha" also appears on the title screen of the video game Treasure Master for the Nintendo Entertainment System, performed by Tim Follin.

The series later inspired a video game and a movie.

Much of the series was filmed in the beach community of San Pedro, in Los Angeles.

Huggy Bear, the informant the lead characters depend on, had already appeared earlier in The Rookies, a series written by William Blinn in 1973.

The website Television Heaven called the series a worldwide hit with 1970s charm and held it up as the perfect example of the mismatched cop-partner subgenre.

The fourth season was the last. Although a fifth was planned, rising production costs, public demand for Paul Michael Glaser to leave the series, and a drop in ratings, which put it at number 36 in the Nielsen rankings in 1978, led to its cancellation.
