Russell Baze works at a steel mill in North Braddock, Pennsylvania, in the heart of the Rust Belt, an area with one of the highest unemployment rates in the United States. He lives with his younger brother, Rodney, a veteran who served in the Iraq War. One evening, Russell finds Rodney at a off-track betting parlor and discovers that the money he lost was lent to him by John Petty, owner of a bar that runs illegal games. Rodney owes Petty money, and Russell finds himself caught up in a problem that isn't his. What seemed like a family matter quickly becomes dangerously complicated.

Relativity Media sold the film to foreign distributors for 16 million dollars before its release, which covered its costs.
Eddie Vedder of Pearl Jam re-recorded the song "Release" for the film, from the band's debut album, Ten, which plays during the opening scenes and over the end credits.
