Ángela Vidal is a reporter for «Mientras usted duerme», an evening show in Barcelona that follows a different profession each night. Together with her cameraman, Pablo, she arrives at a fire station to film a report on the overnight shift. Ángela hopes to witness a spectacular fire live, but the night passes quietly until the firefighters receive an emergency call from a building in the city center. An elderly neighbor, locked in her apartment, seems to be in distress, and the other tenants are frightened. Firefighters Álex and Manu get ready to respond, and Ángela and Pablo decide to follow them with the camera rolling, determined not to miss anything that happens on the mission.

Trivia about [REC]

The film cost 1.5 million euros and ranked among the 100 highest-grossing films of the 2000s outside the United States, at No. 96, with more than 33 million dollars in box office earnings.

Manuela Velasco was a newly graduated Communications major who kept flubbing her lines during the casting. The directors were looking for an inexperienced girl, and that mistake won her the role.

In leaked casting footage of Claudia Font, who plays Jennifer, she is seen screaming and pushing away the people holding her.

Sound mixer Xavi Mas explained that the shoot began with ten live tracks and that he used ten microphones for almost the entire shoot, which complicated dialogue editing.

Medeiros's makeup was prepared separately so the lead actors would not see the design before the reveal.

Director of photography Pablo Rosso also plays the cameraman Pablo and shot the entire film from behind the camera while taking part in the scenes.

Most of the firefighters who appear were real workers from the station where the shoot takes place, not professional actors.

[REC] won Best Director, Best Actress, the Audience Award and the José Luis Guarner Critics Award at the Sitges Film Festival in 2007.
