Another blow from Jackie Chan.

In 1887, the Imperial Seal of China is stolen from the Forbidden City by a group of Boxers led by Lord Nelson Rathbone, an English aristocrat. During the raid, the aristocrat kills the guardian of the jewel, who, before dying, entrusts his daughter Lin with a mysterious box meant for his brother Chon Wang. Chon is a sheriff in Carson City, Nevada, and lives far from China. When he receives a letter from his sister, he learns of their father's death. Now he must decide what to do with the box that has come into his hands and with the man who killed his father. Jackie Chan and Owen Wilson star, directed by David Dobkin.

Trivia about Shanghai Knights

According to Jackie Chan's memoir, the first choice for the role was Hong Kong actress Faye Wong, although she was ultimately not chosen.

Fann Wong landed the role after an audition in London. Her part in the film was expanded by roughly 30% after her performance during filming.

Although real London landmarks appear, most of the scenes set in the city were shot in Prague, between February 4 and June 21, 2002.

In May 2015, MGM Studios announced a third installment titled Shanghai Dawn, with the expected return of Jackie Chan, Owen Wilson, and Fann Wong.

In 2024, Alfred Gough said the sequel probably would not be made, due to Chan losing interest in the project.

The film grossed $88.3 million worldwide on an estimated budget of $50 million; in the United States and Canada, it earned $60.48 million, including $19.6 million during its opening weekend.

Aaron Taylor-Johnson played Charlie Chaplin in one of their first credited film roles; the credits still list the name Aaron Johnson.

The production used CinemaScope and also shot on location in Czech sites such as Kutná Hora, Karlovy Vary, Terezín, and Hluboká nad Vltavou Castle, as well as several places in Prague.

Quotes by Shanghai Knights

Who loves you, baby?
[as it starts raining] Oh, this country blows.
You know what I call him? Not Roy O'Bannon. Roy O'Baloney!
That's a terrible name for a detective. Sherlock Holmes?
Hey, Rathbone! I was just thinking of a title for my new book. "Roy O'Brannon vs. Little Lord Sissy." Or how about "Roy O'Brannon versus the Man who would be Queen?"
I call that my kung pow chicken.
