In the coldest place on Earth, he's the hottest thing around.

Cody Maverick is a teenage penguin with a yellow tuft who lives in Shiverpool, Antarctica, with his mother Edna and his older brother Glen. Ever since he met the famous emperor penguin Zeke "Big Z" Topanga many years ago, he has dreamed of becoming a professional surfer. A talent scout named Michael Abromowitz arrives in town looking for contestants for the Big Z Memorial Surfing Championship, which will be held on Pen-Gu Island. But bad ocean conditions keep Cody from showing off his skills to those watching him. Directed by Ash Brannon and Chris Buck, the movie takes the form of a mockumentary: a camera crew follows the young penguin through his first professional competition and records every step he takes.

Trivia about Surf's Up

To reinforce the feel of a mockumentary, the voice actors were asked to improvise during recording, according to the English Wikipedia.

The animation team captured the movements of a physical camera operator with motion capture to achieve the feel of a handheld documentary.

The version of "Wipe Out" heard in the movie is performed by the punk band The Queers, but on the official soundtrack it is credited to the pseudonym "Big Nose."

The movie grossed $152 million against a budget of $100 million and was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature.

The sequel, released direct-to-video, features WWE wrestlers such as John Cena, Triple H, The Undertaker, Vince McMahon, and Paige in the cast.

Unlike many animated productions, the voice actors recorded every scene together; the sessions were documented in a making-of feature included among the DVD extras.

Kelly Slater and Rob Machado, professional surfers, provided the voices of their own animated versions, while Selema Masekela voiced the competition commentator.

The movie won two Annie Awards for technical achievement and earned ten nominations at those awards, in addition to its Academy Award nomination for Best Animated Feature.
