The movie opens in 1954, during the First Indochina War. A French patrol falls into an ambush set by the Viet Minh, and its commander, Nguyen Huu An, gives his men an order that leaves no room for doubt. The story then moves to 1965, in the middle of the Vietnam War. There we meet Lieutenant Colonel Hal Moore, played by Mel Gibson, who commands some four hundred soldiers who must prepare for an area known as the Valley of Death. Moore knows his men are heading into hostile territory. Directed by Randall Wallace, the film shows how the unit gears up for a confrontation that has not yet begun.

Trivia about We Were Soldiers

The movie includes a heroic final charge at the end of the battle that does not appear in the original book it is based on.
Randall Wallace paid the book's authors 100,000 dollars a year out of his own pocket so they would write the screenplay that best matched the original story.
To capture the battle scenes, the shoot used up to eleven cameras, and the crew had to work quickly before the sun went down or came up.
With 115.4 million dollars in worldwide box office, the movie exceeded a budget of between 70 and 75 million.

  • Such a tragedy. They will think this was their victory. So this will become an American war. And the end will be the same... except for the numbers who will die before we get there.
