Desmond Harrington was born in Georgia, but his roots are in the streets of New York. He grew up in the Bronx and was educated in Catholic schools before realizing that his future wasn't in books. He worked as a laborer and bartender in Manhattan to pay the bills while looking for a crack to break into the industry.
Fate made the decision for him.
In 1999, Luc Besson gave him his first real break in The Messenger: The Story of Joan of Arc. He had no prior experience in major productions, but he held his own alongside names that already carried weight in the industry. That role as Aulon allowed him to leave the tray behind and focus on the scripts that started piling up on his desk.
The 2000s were a rollercoaster of genres for the actor. In 2002 he took part in Ghost Ship, and a year later he starred in Wrong Turn (known in Spain as Km. 666), a horror film that unexpectedly became a cult favorite. But movies alone weren't enough to maintain the relevance he was looking for.
His entry into Dexter in 2008 completely changed his work pace. He played Joey Quinn across seventy-two episodes and became a key part of Showtime's lineup. Audiences scrutinized every one of his gestures, as well as his obvious physical changes during the final seasons.
Many viewers speculated about his health because of how thin he looked. He simply explained that he had started running and eating better to get through the long shooting days. But in Hollywood, rumors tend to travel faster than facts.
It wasn't all spotlights and applause.
Harrington found a comfortable niche playing morally ambiguous celebrities. In 2009 he joined the cast of Gossip Girl as Jack Bass, the scheming uncle everyone loved to hate. It was a supporting role, but his presence was so powerful that he kept returning until the show ended in 2012.
Nicolas Winding Refn called him in 2016 to take part in The Neon Demon. It was a more visceral and aesthetic return to film, in which he played Jack, a photographer who fit perfectly with the cold gaze Harrington has perfected over the years. His face seems made for the most sinister suspense.
In 2020, he played FBI Director Louis Freeh in ten episodes of the series Manhunt, directed by Michael Dinner.
