Synopsis of Derry Girls

Derry, Northern Ireland, mid-1990s. Erin Quinn, sixteen years old, is an ambitious, sarcastic girl with literary aspirations. She attends a Catholic girls' school run by nuns, where she shares a class with her cousin Orla, her friends Claire and Michelle, and James, Michelle's English cousin, who has just arrived in town. The five of them live amid British Army checkpoints and armed police officers who appear on the news, in a city traditionally divided between Catholics and Protestants. Still, they worry about what concerns any teenager: love, friendship, family, and the image they project to others. Every absurd situation they face collides with the political conflict, and that clash is where the comedy comes from. Created by Lisa McGee, the series airs on Channel 4 and stars Saoirse-Monica Jackson.

Trivia about Derry Girls

The show has inspired a mural of its main characters painted on the side of the Badgers Bar and Restaurant on Orchard Street in Derry, which has become a popular tourist attraction.
Derry Girls was the most-watched show in Northern Ireland since modern records began, in 2002, with an average audience of 519,000 viewers and a 64.2 percent share.
The second season was confirmed after the first episode aired on January 11, 2018, before the first season had even ended.
Lisa McGee drew on her own life for some events in the series, such as writing a letter to Chelsea Clinton, daughter of the Clintons.
The March 13, 2022 episode of The Simpsons features an ice cream parlor called Dairy Girls Ice Cream, which writer Matt Selman confirmed was a reference to Derry Girls.
Derry Girls became the most successful comedy on Channel 4 since Father Ted.
"Derry Girls" ended after its third season because Lisa McGee had planned from the start to close the series after three seasons, though she left the door open for her characters to return in another format.
At the 2023 British Academy Television Awards, "Derry Girls" won Best Scripted Comedy, and Siobhán McSweeney won Best Female Performance in a Comedy Programme for Sister Michael.
