Synopsis of Shōgun

Set in Japan in 1600, the series pits two men from opposing worlds against each other. John Blackthorne is a reckless English sailor who is shipwrecked in Japan, a land whose unfamiliar culture begins to transform him completely. Facing him is Lord Yoshii Toranaga, a shrewd and powerful daimyō who must navigate his dangerous political rivals. Alongside both is Lady Toda Mariko, a woman with highly valuable skills but dishonorable family ties, who must prove her worth and loyalty. Created by Rachel Kondo and Justin Marks, and starring Hiroyuki Sanada, it airs on FX and Hulu. It is based on James Clavell's novel, and its cast is largely Japanese, with most of the dialogue in Japanese.

Trivia about Shōgun

The first season won 18 categories at the Primetime Emmy Awards and the Creative Arts Emmy Awards, a record for the most-awarded television season in Emmy history.

Principal photography was scheduled for 2019, but it was delayed because the network felt the production was not in good enough shape. Sanada shot for one day that year so FX could keep the rights.

According to Nikkan Gendai, Japanese extras were paid 50,000 yen per day, a figure far higher than in Japanese productions, where pay ranges from zero to 5,000 yen.

A Japanese pine used on the set was donated and planted at Port Moody City Hall after filming.

Video game designer Hideo Kojima compared the series to a Game of Thrones set in 17th-century Japan.

The score was composed by Atticus Ross, Leopold Ross, and Nick Chuba, and Taro Ishida arranged and recorded traditional Japanese music, including gagaku.

The pandemic forced the cancellation of the original plans to shoot part of the series in Japan, so the production was filmed entirely in Vancouver over eleven months.

To prepare for his role, Cosmo Jarvis studied how sailors of the era may have spoken and listened to old recordings; afterward, Rachel Kondo suggested he lower his voice to suit the character.
