The Voice That Funded a Life

Alex Borstein wasn't looking to voice an animated mom when she walked into the FOX offices. It was 1998, and Seth MacFarlane needed someone who sounded like a mix of her cousins from New Jersey. The audition was quick.

And it worked from the first second.

Lois Griffin was born with an unbearably nasal voice that was oddly magnetic. Borstein not only voiced her but also joined the writers' room to shape the Quahog family. In 1999, the series Family Guy premiered, and the actress landed a steady paycheck that let her take risks in other areas.

Before that, she worked on MADtv, where her strength was physical comedy and extreme characterizations. Her characters, like Ms. Swan, irritated critics but fascinated audiences in the late nineties. The real money, however, was in animation and executive producing.

In 2011, she started working as a production consultant on Shameless. She wrote scripts and oversaw storylines for five seasons. Her ability to handle gritty drama and dark comedy took her from low-budget TV sketches.

The Leather Coat and the Two Emmy Awards

Amy Sherman-Palladino was determined to have Borstein in Gilmore Girls. A contract dispute with MADtv prevented her from playing Sookie St. James in 2000. The creator then waited nearly two decades to give her the role that changed her standing in the industry.

Susie Myerson appeared in 2017 with a tilted cap and a fierce attitude. Borstein built the agent character in The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel on real old-school New York agents. She won the Emmy for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series in 2018 and repeated the feat in 2019.

It was belated poetic justice.

Her style has never been that of the conventional Hollywood star. The actress used that momentum to release her special Alex Borstein: Corsets & Clown Suits in 2023. In this project she mixed music with monologue to talk about her divorce and her Jewish heritage without censorship filters.

Budapest's Legacy on Set

Her grandmother survived the Holocaust, and that genetic toughness runs through every one of her performances. Borstein doesn't hide that her humor comes from family tragedy and a fairly pessimistic view of the world. In 2022, she appeared in the film The Rebel Empress (Corsage), playing Countess Marie Festetics.

But her comfort zone is still the studio microphone. In 2022, she lent her voice to the animated film The Bad Guys. She still collects multimillion-dollar checks for every season of Family Guy while choosing small projects in Europe that interest her more than fame.

Her production company, Crackerbox Productions, has managed the rights to several comedy formats since 2020. Filming of the fifth and final season of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel officially wrapped in November 2022 in New York City. Borstein left her dressing room without taking any memento from the set.
