Dan Jeannotte spent entire weeks in 2014 squeezed into a lycra suit covered in optical sensors. That year, he lent his features and voice to Arno Dorian, the protagonist of the video game Assassin’s Creed Unity. It was grueling physical work that required millimeter-level precision in every facial expression so the graphics engines could capture his essence.
The video game industry was his first great school.
Born in Montreal in 1981, his training didn't start at the world's most exclusive drama schools. Before stepping onto a television set, he honed his craft in theater improv with the group Uncalled For. That mental agility for handling scenes without a script prepared him to move with ease through his first auditions for Canadian television.
But his face began to become familiar to the general public when he moved beyond motion capture to period costume roles. In 2015, he joined the cast of Reign to bring James Stuart to life. The shoot was split between European castles and studios in Toronto, demanding a performance that blended political intrigue with teen romantic drama.
His move into American television came with The Bold Type between 2017 and 2021. He played Ryan Decker, a journalist who broke the mold of the one-dimensional love interest. His character combined vulnerability and cynicism that connected with the young audience of the Freeform network.
And the work pace didn't slow down during the show's five seasons.
In 2022, the Star Trek franchise came calling with a tough challenge. Jeannotte accepted the role of George Samuel Kirk in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds. It's no ordinary character, since he plays the older brother of the legendary James T. Kirk. His presence on the show adds a family dimension needed to understand the context of the most famous captain in the starfleet.
Sam Kirk's mustache is not a fake.
Jeannotte has said in several technical interviews that keeping that facial hair was an aesthetic requirement to tell the two Kirk brothers apart. During the shoot of 2023 at the Ontario studios, the actor had to balance big-budget science fiction with far more down-to-earth but profitable projects.
Outside the big franchises, the actor has found a steady niche in Hallmark Channel productions. In 2022 he starred in The Royal Nanny, and in 2023 he led the cast of Our Christmas Mural. These are express shoots that usually wrap up in less than two weeks of actual work on set.
This kind of film demands a very specific technical discipline to avoid slipping into caricature. Jeannotte draws on his comedy experience to lighten scripts that can be a bit too rigid or predictable.
Because the streaming market demands a huge amount of light content every year.
In 2024, he shot the adaptation of Sense and Sensibility, playing Edward Ferrars. The production followed strict historical costume protocols and premiered directly on digital platforms in February. His contract for upcoming seasons of Star Trek ensures his presence on cable television through the end of the decade.
