Elodie Yung wasn't looking for the spotlight when she signed up for karate classes at age nine. She spent an entire decade in the dojos of Seine-Saint-Denis perfecting her technique until she earned her black belt. That physical discipline shaped her entry into film long before she seriously considered making acting a career.
Law was her safety net.
While training, she earned a law degree from the University of Paris. But her fortune changed course in 2004 when she landed a role in Les fils du vent simply because she could move better than anyone. She didn't need stunt doubles for her first risky sequences, and that gave her an immediate competitive edge.
In 2011, she caught the attention of David Fincher for a small role in The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. It was a strategic move that took her out of the European circuit and put her on the radar of casting directors in Los Angeles. So she decided to move and try her luck in a much more aggressive market.
The American industry quickly typecast her in pure action roles. In 2013, she played Jinx in G.I. Joe: Retaliation and proved she could keep up the pace of a big-budget blockbuster. But she was looking for something with more psychological depth beneath the fight choreography.
And the gamble paid off.
In 2016, she got her big break with the role of Elektra Natchios. The challenge was huge because the character came off earlier box office disappointments on the big screen. Yung chose to ignore the comparisons and built a icy yet emotionally broken assassin for the second season of Daredevil.
For this role, she trained for months in mixed martial arts and sai fighting. Her performance made such an impression that she reprised the role in The Defenders during 2017. Critics praised her ability to convey danger without delivering a single line of dialogue in the most tense scenes.
After years tied to the superhero world, she looked for a project where drama mattered more than punches. In 2022, she took the lead role in The Cleaning Lady, playing Thony De La Rosa. She is a Cambodian doctor who ends up working for the mob in Las Vegas to save her sick son.
Filming moved to New Mexico.
This project marked her first major responsibility as the undisputed lead on U.S. broadcast television. In 2024, the series reached its third season and kept a loyal audience that topped three million viewers per episode. The executive producers demanded script changes to adapt the lead character's nationality to the actress's real background.
Fox confirmed the production of twelve new episodes for the 2024 season, with a budget trimmed by the earlier writers' strike.
