Finneas O'Connell never set out to become the architect of modern pop when he started filming scenes in Los Angeles. In 2011, he played a student in the comedy Bad Teacher, and shortly after joined the cast of the series Glee for its final season in 2015. He trained as a method actor who wrote songs between takes.
That duality defined his early years in the industry. While other teenagers were looking for advertising agents, he preferred to lock himself away and figure out how a basic synthesizer worked. In 2014, he starred in Life Inside Out, an independent film written by his own mother, in which his relationship with music already hinted at being far more than a simple hobby.
And then everything changed in a room just a few square meters in size.
The production of Ocean Eyes in 2015 was the technical turning point. Finneas decided he didn't need a recording studio that cost a thousand dollars an hour to create a suffocating, minimalist atmosphere. That total control over sound became his personal signature before major labels came knocking with million-dollar contracts.
Her sister Billie Eilish's massive success often overshadows the fact that Finneas is behind every sound texture we hear on their records. In 2019, he released his first solo EP, Blood Harmony. It showed that his voice had a more classic register, closer to singer-songwriter pop than to the experimental style he brought to other artists' productions.
But his true obsession has always been film. In 2021, he composed the original score for The Fallout, a teen drama where silence weighed as much as the piano notes. He wasn't after catchy melodies but ambient textures that underscored the characters' trauma without becoming obvious.
The film industry welcomed them with unusual speed.
He won his first Oscar in 2022 for the main song from No Time to Die, the James Bond installment that closed the era of Daniel Craig. It was a classical orchestration job in which he had to fit his minimalist style to the demands of a franchise that calls for epic scale in every bar. He repeated the feat in 2024 with the song from Barbie, which earned him a second golden statuette before he turned thirty.
His career didn't stop with the academy awards. In 2024, he released his second studio album, For Cryin' Out Loud!, recorded largely with a live band to move away from the digital coldness of his early days. It was a risky move that aimed to recapture the energy of live performance in a market saturated with software touch-ups and processed vocals.
That same year, they took on one of their most complex technical challenges by scoring the series Disclaimer, directed by Alfonso Cuarón. Working with a director of that caliber forced them to change their usual workflow. They had to create pieces that would mirror the fragmented narrative of the story, which took months of testing with unconventional string instruments.
Craft came before fame.
Finneas O’Connell has gone from being the star's brother to the name prestige directors put on their lists when they want something different. By 2024, their catalog already included ten Grammy Awards and an aesthetic influence that has turned homemade music production into a professional quality standard for Hollywood.
For the recording of his latest orchestral pieces, he used an analog microphone system that emulates the sound of studios from the 1950s.
