Halston Sage was born in Los Angeles, which shaped the pace of any career in the film industry. She didn't have to cross the country to chase auditions because she was already at the heart of the business. In 2012, she landed her first major role in the Nickelodeon series How to Rock. That was the home base for an actress who quickly understood how the studio system worked.
And the gamble paid off.
That same year, she appeared in The First Time, a film that premiered at the Sundance Film Festival. It was her first brush with independent film before she moved on to mainstream projects. Her real breakthrough came when she began working with directors who were looking for young talent for raunchy comedies or generational dramas.
In 2013 she appeared in The Bling Ring under the direction of Sofia Coppola and shared the screen with Adam Sandler in Grown Ups 2. Those are two opposite poles of the industry, and Sage handled both without scheduling issues. A year later she shot the comedy Neighbors (2014), where she starred in one of the film's most talked-about scenes alongside Rose Byrne. The film's budget was **$18 million** and it went on to gross more than $270 million worldwide.
Television came knocking again with a high-budget science fiction project. In 2017, she put on Alara Kitan's uniform in The Orville, the series created by Seth MacFarlane. Her character required hours of makeup for facial prosthetics (an exhausting technical process for any performer). The show had a solid following among genre fans who wanted something different from the usual franchises.
But her exit from the series in season two sparked all kinds of theories among viewers.
There was never a dramatic official explanation for her departure. She simply stopped appearing in the credits and moved on to projects that let her work without latex prosthetics on her face. So in 2019, she joined the cast of Prodigal Son to play Ainsley Whitly. The Fox series explored family trauma and crime, offering her a much darker range than her previous teen comedy work.
The network canceled the series after two seasons aired between 2019 and 2021.
In 2023, she starred in The List, a romantic comedy where she also worked as an executive producer. This move is common among actresses who want to control the material that reaches them instead of waiting for their agent to call. That same year, she appeared in Daughter of the Bride, a digital-market production made for streaming platforms that was filmed on locations in New Jersey.
The industry has changed its distribution model dramatically. Sage has been able to move between theatrical releases and direct-to-streaming premieres without losing traction with casting directors. In August 2024, The Union premiered on Netflix, an action movie in which she shares the cast with Mark Wahlberg and Halle Berry.
This espionage film had an estimated budget of **$160 million** and was shot mainly in London and various locations in Italy.
