The Hidden Side Behind the Tin

Jack Huston joined the set of Boardwalk Empire in 2010 to play a supporting role in just three episodes.

His character was Richard Harrow, a sniper disfigured in the Great War who hid his face behind a metal mask. But the intensity of his gaze and that broken voice led the writers to rewrite the plot to keep him on screen for four seasons.

The family name doesn't hand you talent.

Being born into a dynasty that includes John Huston and Anjelica Huston means carrying an expectation that would crush anyone. He chose to train at Hurtwood House in England before trying his luck in Hollywood. And he did it without taking shortcuts. His early years in the industry consisted of minor roles in films such as Neighborhood Watch in 2005 and the adaptation of Factory Girl in 2006.

That start was slow and deliberate. Because Jack Huston never sought to be the heartthrob on teen magazine covers. He preferred period films and characters with complex psychological edges. In 2013, he played Jack Kerouac in Kill Your Darlings. There he proved he could carry the weight of a literary icon in front of the camera without blinking.

The setback that stalled his rise

The industry punishes mistakes.

In 2016, he took the lead role in the remake of Ben-Hur directed by Timur Bekmambetov. It was a 100 million dollar bet that ended in one of the most notorious financial and critical disasters in history. The film barely grossed 26 million at the U.S. box office. But Huston survived the wreckage because his performance was one of the few things that escaped the widespread fire.

That commercial failure changed his project selection strategy. So he returned to prestige television and supporting roles in productions with major directors. In 2019, he worked under Martin Scorsese in The Irishman. He didn't need to be the lead for his presence in scenes with Al Pacino to feel magnetic.

A year later, he joined the fourth season of Fargo in 2020. He played Odis Weff, a corrupt cop with nervous tics that allowed him to fully step away from the image of a Hollywood heir. At this stage, his priority was working with creators who valued technical detail over instant fame.

The leap to the other side of the camera

Maturity brought him the need to control the whole story.

In 2021, he appeared in House of Gucci directed by Ridley Scott, bringing Domenico De Sole to life. It was a dry, corporate role that contrasted with his work on Mayfair Witches in 2023. In this series based on Anne Rice's novels, he played Lasher, a supernatural entity that brought him back to the dark territory where he always seems most at home.

But the fundamental shift in his career came in 2023 with the release of Day of the Fight. It was his first film as a director and screenwriter. Shot in black and white, the film follows a boxer who leaves prison to face his final fight. Critics at the Venice Film Festival praised its narrative rhythm and its ability to film scenes with an unusual visual rawness.

Jack Huston has moved from being the grandson of a genius to an author with his own voice. His current approach skips superhero blockbusters to focus on dramas about broken characters. Day of the Fight cost a fraction of what Ben-Hur spent on catering, yet it better defines his place in cinema today.

Production on his feature directorial debut was completed in just 21 shooting days in New York.
