From a Michigan High School to the FBI Lab

John Francis Daley was thirteen years old when they sat in front of the camera to play Sam Weir. In 1999, the world discovered a skinny teenager who embodied school humiliation with painful precision. Freaks and Geeks lasted only one season, but that ratings failure became the instruction manual for an entire generation of creators in Hollywood.

He was a kid on a set of giants.

After the series was canceled, Daley spent years jumping between supporting roles and projects that never quite took off. In 2007 he joined the cast of Bones to play psychologist Lance Sweets. What started as a temporary collaboration lasted seven seasons and 140 episodes, which gave him the financial security he needed to start writing his own stories during downtime on set.

But his ambition wasn't in the spotlight. While other actors chased the role of a lifetime in art-house cinema, Daley shut himself away with his partner Jonathan Goldstein to write raunchy comedy scripts. In 2011 they sold the script for Horrible Bosses, and the film grossed 209 million dollars worldwide. That figure was the definitive ticket out of his career as a television actor.

Writing as a Lifeline

The move into directing was no walk in the park. In 2015 they debuted with Vacation, a sequel that critics tore apart without mercy. That blow could have ended their career behind the camera. But instead of hiding, they accepted the job of writing the screenplay for Spider-Man: Homecoming in 2017. The youthful, light approach they brought to the character of Peter Parker brought freshness back to a franchise that seemed worn out.

The studio comedy was changing.

In 2018, Daley and Goldstein directed Game Night. The film showed that a commercial comedy could be shot with the look and pacing of a David Fincher thriller. The use of long takes and carefully crafted cinematography kept the project from the flat standards of the genre. They managed to gross 117 million with a simple premise about a game night that goes wrong.

So the leap to big-budget, massive productions was the logical next step. In 2019, studios began to see in Daley a filmmaker able to handle humor and large-scale action without losing control of the budget or the storyline.

Dice, Dragons and Multimillion-Dollar Budgets

In 2023, Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves premiered with Daley at the helm. The challenge was huge, because earlier adaptations of the tabletop roleplaying game had been creative disasters. Daley opted for a tone that recalled the adventures of the 1980s. He wasn't going for the dark epic of other franchises, but for the pure fun of a game night among friends.

The risk was total.

And although the global box office of 208 million dollars was not an explosive hit, critics praised the solidity of the direction. Daley made a complex intellectual property accessible to the general public. Because his method always focuses on prioritizing the chemistry between the characters over computer-generated visual effects.

In 2024, production began on Mayday for Apple TV+, with Ryan Reynolds and Kenneth Branagh in the main cast. The shoot used 2 Sony Venice cameras with anamorphic Panavision lenses to capture the action sequences at sea.
