Jordan Claire Robbins arrived in Toronto with a suitcase and plans to study psychology at university. Acting and film sets weren't part of her original plan. But modeling came along as a financial lifeline and ended up being the bridge to Canadian film sets.
Her first major breakthrough came after several years of low-profile auditions and brief appearances in series such as 12 Monkeys and Supernatural. In 2019, Netflix selected her to play Grace in The Umbrella Academy. The challenge was enormous, since she had to embody an artificial intelligence disguised as a 1950s housewife.
The actress chose to move away from the robotic mannerisms typical of science fiction. She opted for an unsettling warmth that unsettled viewers from the very first episode. She managed to humanize a tangle of wires and algorithms through a fixed gaze and a smile that never quite felt natural.
And the risk paid off.
Over the three seasons she appeared in, Robbins developed her character's arc from programmed submission to a dangerous self-awareness. The show's shoot in Toronto became her main base of operations for almost five years. There, she learned to handle the pressure of major international productions while keeping her residence in the city.
She was born in Bermuda in 1990 and grew up surrounded by a landscape far removed from the urban settings where she built her career. That island isolation forged a disciplined character that helped her survive the competitiveness of the North American market. Before becoming an actress, she was a standout athlete, and that physicality shows in the way she commands space in front of the camera.
In 2018, she appeared in the feature film Anon, directed by Andrew Niccol. It was a small role, but it taught her how mid-budget films with top-tier stars actually work. She took the job without hesitation because she wanted to see how the veterans moved between takes.
Robbins doesn't believe in divine inspiration. She believes in method and constant repetition.
Her work as a singer and songwriter also takes up a significant part of her time away from the studio. In 2020, she released several singles exploring indie pop-leaning sounds, with lyrics she writes herself in her free time. But music remains a side project that feeds her acting without overshadowing it.
The industry often typecasts actors after a massive television hit, but she quickly tried to break that pattern. In 2022, she starred in The Last Mark, playing a young witness to a murder who must flee two hitmen. It was a gritty, physically demanding shoot that departed entirely from the colorful aesthetic of her previous work.
That same year, she released Escape the Field alongside Theo Rossi. The film was shot in difficult weather conditions across endless cornfields, which demanded considerable physical stamina. The movie was sold to more than fifteen countries before its digital platform release, thanks to the commercial pull of its cast.
Not everything in her career has been a win.
In 2023, she joined the cast of The Villains of Valley View for Disney Channel, looking for a lighter, family-friendly role. The decision surprised some critics who expected her to follow the path of auteur cinema or dark drama. But she prefers to keep a full schedule rather than wait for the perfect role that may never come.
Filming on The Umbrella Academy officially wrapped in 2023, with an estimated budget of $80 million for its final installment.
