Kate Mulgrew was born with a full set of baby teeth. Doctors had to remove them right away because they posed a physical danger to her own tongue. She grew up in an Iowa home where silence was an anomaly and sibling rivalry worked as a survival engine. At seventeen, she moved to New York to study with Stella Adler, and her hunger for the stage pushed her to accept any role that would help her pay the rent.
But she wanted more.
In 1975, Mulgrew landed the role of Mary Ryan on the soap opera Ryan's Hope. That job gave her unusual financial stability for a twenty-year-old actress, but it also taught her how grueling daily shoots could be. During that period she became pregnant and decided to give her daughter up for adoption to prioritize her career, in an environment that showed no mercy for early motherhood. That decision shaped her character and her view of acting as a constant sacrifice.
In 1979, she starred in Mrs. Columbo, hoping to capitalize on the success of the famous detective. The series was a ratings failure, and critics were merciless about the premise of a wife solving crimes. Mulgrew didn't sink. She returned to the theater and landed supporting roles in film until an opening in a science fiction franchise changed her financial trajectory forever.
In 1995, Mulgrew took on the challenge of captaining a starship on television. Filming Star Trek: Voyager lasted seven years and demanded sixteen-hour days on a soundstage with no natural light. She was the first woman to lead a series in the franchise, which carried a political pressure that almost no one at the studio knew how to handle. She imposed military-style discipline on set and insisted that her character not be sexualized to maintain authority over the crew.
Nobody expected that comeback.
But the physical exhaustion took a toll on her personal life. In 2001, the series ended, and Mulgrew returned to the Broadway stage to regain direct contact with audiences. She played Katharine Hepburn in the play Tea at Five and toured the United States, proving there was life beyond command bridges and visual effects. Throughout that decade, Hollywood ignored her, but theater kept her at the forefront of the New York industry.
Years passed, and the phone stopped ringing as often as it used to. In 2013, an opportunity came from a streaming platform that had not yet dominated the global market. She put on a kitchen apron, dyed her hair a bright red, and adopted a Russian accent built through hours of rehearsal with a phonetics coach. The role of Galina "Red" Reznikov in Orange Is the New Black brought her back to the center of conversation without needing anti-aging makeup.
And the gamble paid off.
In 2015, she published her memoir Born with Teeth, in which she candidly recounted her search for the daughter she gave up in the 1970s. The book broke away from the usual Hollywood promotional fare and showed a woman who preferred brutal honesty to red-carpet diplomacy. In 2019, she released a second volume, How to Forget, focused on her parents' illness and the grieving process in a large family.
In 2021, she returned to her role as Kathryn Janeway, but only to voice an animated version in Star Trek: Prodigy. The syndication deal for reruns of her main series keeps generating recurring annual income that lets her choose her projects with complete freedom. In 2024, production of the third season of The Gilded Age confirmed her place in the cast, with a salary suited to her standing as a veteran of television. Filming for her scenes was scheduled to wrap in under four weeks of actual work.
