There's no middle ground with Kisho Taniyama. Either you love that metallic timbre that always seems on the verge of breaking, or you overlook the power of one of the pillars of Japanese dubbing. In 1995, it all began with a minor role in Captain Tsubasa J. It wasn't an explosion. It was more of a steady trickle of supporting characters until the industry realized his voice worked best under pressure.
Taniyama belongs to that breed of actors who aren't afraid to sound unpleasant. His technique is built on breath control and a controlled aggressiveness that lets him jump from comedic registers to the rawest drama in seconds. But his real strength lies in the naturalness with which he approaches the arrogance of his characters.
Music is no mere embellishment in his career.
In 2005, he founded the group GRANRODEO together with guitarist e-ZUKA. The project was born to fill a gap in animation soundtracks and ended up filling arenas such as the Nippon Budokan. The band signed contracts for more than thirty different series, making Taniyama's voice omnipresent on television screens across half the world.
In 2013, the phenomenon of Attack on Titan arrived. His portrayal of Jean Kirstein gave a layer of humanity to a series full of impossible heroes. Taniyama didn't aim to make Jean the bravest. He aimed to make him the most real. Because in a world of titans, someone had to represent the most ordinary fear and envy.
And the gamble paid off.
That same year, he voiced Natsuki Shinomiya in Uta no Prince-sama. The contrast here was total. He went from military tension to the sparkle of youthful pop without losing credibility. As a result, casting directors stopped seeing him as a specialist in tough guys and started offering him roles with greater psychological complexity.
In 2016, he took on the role of Chuya Nakahara in Bungo Stray Dogs. It's a character that captures his whole essence: a tough guy with class who demands bone-rattling screams and an almost aristocratic elegance. His performance as Chuya remains his most profitable work in terms of merchandise and presence at international events.
But not everything has been smooth sailing in his career.
Despite his massive success, he has had to deal with periods of vocal fatigue that forced him to cancel concerts in 2019. The demands of maintaining a rockstar level while working twelve-hour days in the recording studio took their toll. Even so, he returned to the sound booth with a more refined technique that relies less on pure shouting.
In 2021, he returned to his role in the final season of Attack on Titan. The voice recordings from those episodes show a deliberate wear that fits the maturity of the character. Because Taniyama knows how to age with his roles. In 2024, his schedule remains focused on the new installments of Bungo Stray Dogs and on producing records with his band. The contract for his latest concert tour limits him to a maximum of two performances per week to protect his vocal cords.
