Lindsey Broad knows what it's like for half the planet to hate her because of a script. In 2011, she joined the set of The Office to play Cathy Simms, and her digital life filled up with insults. Fans of the show didn't forgive her character for trying to seduce Jim Halpert in a Florida hotel.
She received real verbal attacks on social media years after the episodes aired. The audience confused fiction with reality so aggressively that the actress had to handle the harassment with a mix of humor and distance. That was not a simple anecdote from the set.
It was a brutal trial by fire.
But Broad had already done her homework in New York. She trained at Pennsylvania State University and had mastered the stage before ever setting foot on a television set. In 2008, she landed her first role in Gossip Girl, playing a journalist in a single episode.
And the industry took notice.
Her move into mainstream film came in 2012 with the movie 21 Jump Street. She shared scenes with Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum in a production with a budget of $42 million. There she showed that her comedic style worked in large-scale projects without losing the naturalness of independent film.
In 2013, she worked under Stephen Merchant on the HBO series Hello Ladies. She played Edith in a story about the struggle to fit into the social scene of Los Angeles. Broad avoided the usual tics of physical comedy and went for a drier, silence-based humor instead.
But the noise from Scranton never fully faded.
Despite appearing in projects such as Don Jon in 2013 directed by Joseph Gordon-Levitt, audiences kept associating her face with the secretary who nearly broke up the most beloved TV marriage in the United States. So she decided to diversify her range toward much darker territory.
The definitive change of direction came with the series In the Dark, which premiered in 2019. During the first two seasons, she played Jules Becker (the lead's best friend) and left behind any trace of light comedy. Her performance became more physical and restrained, moving away from the likable supporting characters.
In 2022, she took part in the documentary series The Last Movie Stars, directed by Ethan Hawke. She provided her voice to recreate interview transcripts in a six-episode project about the lives of Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward. It was a technical job that demanded vocal precision and offered little visual showcase.
Broad lives in Los Angeles and maintains a strict privacy policy regarding her two children. In 2014, she married Sean Bradley in a ceremony away from the press. Her role in the series Benders in 2015 lasted only eight episodes before IFC canceled it for good.
