The Captain Who Didn't Ask for Permission

Lisa Ryder arrived on the Toronto sets with classical training from the University of Toronto and an energy that threw casting directors off balance. She wasn't after magazine-cover fame but the solid skill of the craft. Before heading into outer space, she spent years honing her skills in independent theater with the company Bald Ego.

In 2000, her life changed when she accepted the role of Beka Valentine in Andromeda. That character broke the mold for women in science fiction because she never needed anyone to rescue her from her own ship. The series ran for five seasons and 110 episodes, keeping her busy until 2005.

And the audience embraced her right away.

But her time on television was no bed of roses. Ryder had to endure endless shoots and costumes that sometimes made it hard to even breathe. So she held on to her craft to stay focused amid all that green screen.

From Space Horror to Teaching

In 2001, she filmed Jason X and stepped into the role of Kay-Em 14, an android who ends up becoming a killing machine. It was a strange project that many critics dismissed. But over the following decades, the movie gained cult status among fans of the Friday the 13th franchise for its complete lack of inhibition.

Consistency is her only secret.

The Canadian industry is small, and Ryder knew it well. That's why she never stopped working on local productions. In 2017, she appeared in the series Mary Kills People and proved her acting maturity was intact. Her ability to hold a shot without saying a word was her greatest tool on the job.

There were years of drought when interesting roles were scarce and auditions ended in administrative silence. In this business, memory is short and the phone stops ringing without warning. So she decided to diversify her career toward mentoring new talent.

Not everything was a commercial success.

In 2024, she appeared in the third season of Skymed, playing the captain of an airline. Filming took place mainly on location in Ontario and Manitoba under extreme weather conditions that forced the production to be delayed three weeks for safety reasons.
