Early days on commercial sets

Megan Suri was born in California in 1999. At age eight, she convinced her parents to take her to auditions in Los Angeles because she wasn't after fame but work. Her first real break came with a tiny role in the film Valentine's Day, directed by Garry Marshall in 2010.

That was a total success from the start.

But it taught her how a big-budget production works. For almost a decade, she landed brief appearances in shows such as Modern Family and The Good Place. These were one-day roles that barely covered the bills, but they toughened her patience in the face of the industry's constant rejection. The actress went to more than a hundred failed auditions before landing a named, recurring character.

The Effect of Teen Comedy

In 2020, she starred in The MisEducation of Bindu, and that's when the industry started to see something different. The film had a small budget and was shot in just twenty days. She played a teenager who suffers bullying, and the script demanded a tricky balance between raw drama and sharp comedy. Critics praised her ability to hold long takes without support from other actors.

And then Netflix came calling.

Her addition to the cast of Never Have I Ever in 2021 changed her public profile overnight. She joined in the second season to play Aneesa, a student who arrives at school to test the protagonist's loyalty. The producers were looking for someone who wouldn't be a caricature, and Suri brought a naturalness that avoided the usual clichés about the Indian community in the United States. Aneesa's role lasted three seasons, until the show ended in 2023.

Horror as a refuge

Her move into genre film came in 2023 with It Lives Inside. In this supernatural horror film, she carried the full weight of the story under the direction of Bishal Dutta. The story blended Hindu folklore with classic teen horror and required the actress to work with practical effects and prosthetics for weeks.

Not everything about that shoot was easy.

Suri had to shoot night scenes at very low temperatures on locations in British Columbia. The physical toll was considerable, since the script demanded constant tension that eventually wore out the entire crew. In 2023, she also took part in the thriller Missing, where the visual language relied entirely on computer screens and mobile devices. The film grossed 48 million dollars on a budget of barely seven million.

The actress prefers scripts that don't try to explain everything through dialogue. In 2024, she focused on independent projects that aimed to move away from the ethnic labels that often limit performers in California. The production of It Lives Inside had an estimated budget of five million dollars for its technical development.
