Paola Turbay came just one step away from the Miss Universe crown in 1992. That night in Bangkok defined her public image in Colombia for decades, though her real plan lay far from the runway. She studied Psychology at the Universidad de los Andes before the spotlight of acting claimed her for good.
Her entry into Colombian television came with O todos en la cama in 1994. It was a generational comedy that worked because audiences connected with her natural style. She wasn't the typical beauty queen trying to act, and that broke the industry's prejudices around local productions of the time.
American television doesn't give anything away for free.
In 2007, she landed the role of Isabel Vega in the CBS series Cane. She shared the screen with Jimmy Smits in a high-budget production that aimed to portray a powerful family in Florida. The series was canceled after just one season due to that year's writers' strike.
Despite the publicity hit from the cancellation, she stayed in Los Angeles. She took part in productions such as The Secret Life of the American Teenager and made brief appearances on True Blood. The pace of work in the United States pushed her to perfect a neutral accent to compete for high-level auditions.
In 2017, she played Diana Bennett in the series The Blacklist. It was a demanding job where precise dialogue was essential to keep pace with James Spader. Supporting roles like this on major networks gave her professional solidity that few Latino actors maintain over the long term.
It was a decision made purely on instinct.
Returning to Bogotá was always a strategic choice for her. She didn't do it for lack of work abroad, but to lead projects that would let her explore characters with more psychological layers. The Colombian industry had changed, and she was ready to take advantage of the streaming platforms' new production model.
In 2023, she took the lead role in Ana de nadie. The RCN production was an adaptation of Señora Isabel, and its ratings exceeded the network's expectations. The script let her portray female maturity without the usual filters of the classic 1990s telenovela.
Returning to Bogotá was always a strategic choice.
She worked under directors such as Luis Alberto Restrepo on the second season of La venganza de Analía, filmed in 2024. Her role as Paulina Mejía demanded a different physical approach and several months of advance preparation. Filming took place at various locations across Colombia with a crew of more than one hundred people.
Her contract for this latest production included specific clauses on rest time between outdoor shoot days. Filming days in 2024 averaged twelve hours of work per day on set.
