Broken Ice and Frayed Wires

Richard Dean Anderson broke both arms playing hockey before he turned seventeen. That accident on the ice in Minnesota ended his dream of becoming a professional athlete, but it forced him to make a living in California. He arrived in Los Angeles with no connections and worked as a whale trainer at a marine park or selling shoes at shopping malls.

In 1976, he landed the role of Dr. Jeff Webber on the series General Hospital. He spent five years there learning the craft of daily television before moving on to prime-time shows with projects that didn't last long on the air. His luck changed when he walked into an audition room with his reading glasses on because he couldn't see a thing.

His audition for MacGyver in 1985 was a technical disaster because of his nearsightedness. But that lack of pretension and his natural manner convinced the producers he was the everyday guy they needed for the role. The series ran for seven seasons and 139 episodes, in which the lead solved international crises with duct tape and basic chemistry knowledge.

He never fired a single gun in seven seasons on the air.

The actor insisted on that condition because he hated gratuitous violence on screen. That decision turned the character into an educational role model for thousands of young people who preferred to use their heads rather than their fists. During that stage, Anderson performed almost all of his own risky stunts until back injuries started to take their toll.

From the Desert to Deep Space

After a couple of TV movies, he took the lead in a franchise again in 1997 with Stargate SG-1. He played Colonel Jack O'Neill for eight seasons as the lead and two more as a guest star. He insisted the character have much more humor than the original movie version, because he didn't want to play a stiff, boring military man.

In 1997, he founded his own production company, Gekko Film Corp, to control his projects and ensure the quality of the scripts. The series became an international sales phenomenon that generated several spin-off products and direct-to-video films. But his life priorities shifted dramatically in 1998 with the birth of his daughter Wylie Quinn Annarose.

He cut his work schedule to three days a week so he could raise her.

So the writers had to come up with plot excuses to explain his character's absences from the space missions. Anderson preferred being at his home in Malibu to the cold studios in Vancouver where the series was filmed. In 2005, he permanently left the main cast, although he returned for occasional cameos in the following years.

Retirement on the Malibu Coast

His commitment to the environment led him to actively collaborate with the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society from the mid-1990s onward. He took part in expeditions to expose whale hunting and used his public image to raise funds for ocean cleanup. The actor always preferred real activism over Hollywood red carpets.

And the industry eventually forgot about him as he stepped away from the spotlight.

His television appearances since 2013 have been extremely rare and limited to parodies of his own past or appearances at fan conventions. In 2022, he attended Wales Comic-Con to meet science fiction fans, but he avoids major media events. He enjoys a low-key retirement focused on his dogs and his passion for landscape photography.

In 2024, he still lives at his property in California and has no acting projects on his professional calendar. The actor's bank account reflects the earnings from having been executive producer of 214 episodes of a franchise sold around the world.
