Rick Worthy was born in Detroit during the summer of 1967. He didn't take a direct path to Hollywood cameras, because his first passion was dance and physical theater at the University of Michigan. There he learned that the body communicates as much as the voice, a lesson he would apply decades later in his science fiction roles.
After graduating, he decided to try his luck in Chicago. He honed his craft on local stages and worked with prestigious companies such as the Goodman Theatre, where the standards were demanding. That period was essential in teaching him that acting is a technical craft before it is a pursuit of fame.
He moved to Los Angeles with barely a few dollars in his pocket.
His arrival in California coincided with a boom in television productions looking for performers with physical presence and classical training. In 1993 he landed his first credited role in the film Rich in Love, but it was television that truly kept him busy throughout the 1990s. Yet he never wanted to be the handsome lead of the show.
Worthy preferred supporting roles with dramatic weight. In 1996 he appeared in Star Trek: Deep Space Nine as a tactical officer, starting a connection with Gene Roddenberry's universe that would last for years. He went on to play as many as five different characters within the franchise, including his role as Noah Lessing in Star Trek: Voyager and the Xindi-Arboreal Jannar in Star Trek: Enterprise.
His real chance to prove his caliber came in 2005. Ronald D. Moore cast him for the reimagined Battlestar Galactica, where he played Simon Agathon, Cylon Model Number Four. His performance was cold and methodical, far removed from the usual theatrics of the genre.
And the gamble paid off.
During that period he combined space drama with guest appearances in long-running series such as CSI and NCIS. In 2012 he joined the cast of The Vampire Diaries to play Rudy Hopkins, showing he could fit into youth-oriented productions without losing the restraint that defines him. Worthy has always known the secret lies in never underestimating the source material, however fantastic it may be.
In 2015, he landed the role that would earn him lasting global recognition. He played Henry Fogg, the dean of Brakebills University in the series The Magicians. His character was a blind man who had to guide young magicians through a dark and cynical world. Worthy kept this role for all five seasons of the series, until it ended in 2020.
It was no walk in the park.
The actor had to learn to act without using his eyes, relying on intonation and hand movement. During the years of filming this series, he also appeared in The Man in the High Castle between 2015 and 2019, where he played Lem Washington. In this Amazon Prime Video production, he played a resistance leader in an alternate reality where the Nazis won the war.
Away from the spotlight, Worthy is an extremely private man. He doesn't attend industry parties or chase easy applause on social media. He prefers to spend his time practicing martial arts, a discipline he has built into the way he moves in front of the camera. In 2021 he appeared in the series Station 19, and in 2023 he could be seen in Mayans M.C., playing Senator Ramos.
His ability to juggle projects nonstop comes from a spartan work ethic. Before shooting, he reads the script looking for the silences in his character. He believes that what an actor doesn't say is often more important than the dialogue. He has appeared in more than 80 productions across film and television since he began his professional career.
He's a long-distance runner in a constant sprint.
In 2024, his schedule still focuses on one-off collaborations for streaming platforms and video game voice work. His deep, commanding voice is an asset that talent agencies value as much as his look. The contract for his last television appearance stipulated ten-hour workdays on the Atlanta set.
