The Weight of Physical Presence

Robert Maillet stands 6 feet 9 inches tall. He is a mountain of muscle who intimidates before he opens his mouth. But behind that façade of an unstoppable giant is a Canadian actor who realized early that his physique was a one-way ticket into genre cinema.

He was born in 1969 in a small town in New Brunswick. He grew up knowing his height would force him to fill spaces others could not. In 1997, he joined the WWF circuit under the name Kurrgan. He was part of a faction of strange, marginalized wrestlers called The Oddities.

It wasn't method acting, but it taught him to handle his stage presence in front of thousands of people. His time in the ring was brief. In 1999, he left professional wrestling to find a way into the big screen.

And then Zack Snyder arrived.

In 2006, he played the Uber-Immortal in 300. He wore a silver mask, and his face was barely visible beneath layers of latex and makeup. Even so, his fight against the Spartans became one of the most remembered sequences in the film.

That movie's success opened the doors of Hollywood wide for him. Casting directors stopped seeing him as an athlete and began treating him as a first-rate narrative tool.

The Punch That Stopped a Shoot

In 2009, he shot Sherlock Holmes under the direction of Guy Ritchie. That production had a serious logistical problem during a fight choreography scene on a pier. Maillet accidentally hit Robert Downey Jr., and the actor ended up on the ground with a bloodied mouth.

Production stopped for several hours to tend to the star. Downey Jr. needed stitches after the impact. But there was no bad blood between them, because the incident enhanced Maillet's reputation as a professional who takes physical contact very seriously.

Guillermo del Toro cast him in 2013 for Pacific Rim. He played Russian pilot Aleksis Kaidanovsky. The Mexican director was so pleased with his discipline that he cast him again for the series The Strain in 2014.

Maillet brought the Master to life over several seasons. The role required exhausting physical endurance to withstand daily makeup sessions. The actor became a specialist in playing monsters with soul.

It wasn't all physical action.

In 2018, he appeared in Deadpool 2 as the mutant Sluggo. He kept landing supporting roles in big-budget productions, such as Becky in 2020. His ability to work under heavy prosthetics is one of his greatest assets in the industry.

In 2021, he took part in the film Vicious Fun, where he explored a side closer to B-movie horror. He has never denied his height. He knows that without those seven feet of stature, he never would have left Canada.

In 2024, he worked on the series Mayor of Kingstown, playing a violent inmate. He still lives in his hometown in New Brunswick. He weighs about 150 kilos and wears a size 52 shoe.
