Rocky Carroll is not an actor of big headlines or Sunset Boulevard scandals. His career is measured in years of service and in an almost military discipline he learned on the stages of New York theater during the 1980s. He was born in Cincinnati in 1963 and trained at the conservatory before realizing that his deep voice would be his greatest professional tool.
In 1990, he earned a Tony Award nomination for his role in August Wilson's The Piano Lesson. That experience set the pace for the following decades. Carroll is an actor of the text, the kind who memorizes even his scene partners' pauses so he never misses a beat when the cameras are rolling live.
Television came knocking thanks to that stage presence.
He moved to Los Angeles to join the comedy Roc in 1991. On that show he worked alongside Charles S. Dutton, and together they experimented with episodes filmed entirely live in front of an audience. But his move into medical drama in 1996 with Chicago Hope is what truly established his profile as a dependable professional in authority roles.
He played Dr. Keith Wilkes across nearly one hundred episodes. There he learned that network television demands a physical stamina few method actors can endure. And he did it without complaint.
In 2008, he joined the cast of NCIS to bring Leon Vance to life, the agency's director. What seemed like a supporting role filling an administrative gap ended up becoming the institutional center of the series. Carroll gave the character a very specific physical habit, a toothpick in his mouth, which helped humanize a man who always made life-or-death decisions.
And the gamble paid off.
But his ambition didn't stop at delivering lines in front of the camera. In 2015, he stepped behind the camera for the first time to direct an episode from the twelfth season titled We Build, We Fight. He discovered that technical control of the set gave him a much fuller view of the audiovisual business than acting alone.
From that moment on, he balanced both sides of his career with clockwork regularity. He wasn't chasing personal glory but the efficiency of the shot. As a result, he became one of the franchise's recurring directors, helming entries where editing pace was the absolute priority.
Off the set, his voice has led animated projects in the DC Comics universe. In 2014, he voiced Silas Stone in the movie Justice League: War and reprised the role in several sequels. It is dry, technical work he does in sound booths, with no makeup or spotlights needed.
His contract with the CBS network has been one of the most stable in the American industry. In 2024, Carroll reached 22 directed episodes within the same production while keeping his place in the main cast.
