Ryan Stiles stands six feet, two inches tall. That height forced him to develop a physical presence that dominated the stage before he delivered his first line. In 1976, he decided high school wasn't for him and dropped out to perform at comedy clubs in Vancouver.
It was a risky bet. But his control over his limbs and his ability to react to empty space opened the doors of Second City in 1986. He worked in Toronto and Los Angeles, refining a style that didn't rely on prepared jokes.
Improv doesn't allow for mistakes.
In 1989, he moved to London to join the original version of Whose Line Is It Anyway?. There he perfected the art of building entire worlds without using a single prop. His chemistry with Colin Mochrie rested on an almost telepathic understanding that would last for decades.
In 1995, his professional life took a practical turn. He joined the cast of The Drew Carey Show to play Lewis Kiniski. For nine years, he kept that steady job while still flying to Los Angeles to record the improv sessions that earned him worldwide fame.
And the audience never stopped laughing.
In 1998, ABC aired the American version of Whose Line Is It Anyway?. Stiles not only performed but also served as executive producer of the format. The show drew massive audiences, and he became the central figure of a show where there was no script.
Because Stiles understood comedy as an immediate chemical reaction.
In 2004, he began his run on Two and a Half Men. He played Dr. Herb Melnick in a total of 30 episodes through 2015. His character was the perfect counterpoint to the show's chaos, and it allowed him to work from a fixed script without losing his natural style.
In 2013, he returned to television with the new season of Whose Line Is It Anyway? on The CW. He remained a veteran presence as new generations of comics tried to keep up with him on stage.
In 2023, the final episodes of the show's twentieth season were filmed at studios in California. Stiles lives in Washington State, where he founded the Upfront Theatre to train new talent in the art of live performance. The admission fee for his local training shows stayed at twenty dollars for years.
