In the near future, virtual reality consoles have left electronics behind. They are now biotech organisms called game pods, which connect to bio-ports, surgically implanted connectors in players' spines. Allegra Geller is a video game designer and the creator of eXistenZ, a game so original that players follow it with devotion. Her professional world is dominated by the rivalry between two companies, Antenna Research and Cortical Systematics, which compete for the market. Meanwhile, a group of fanatics known as the Realists opposes both companies and denounces that virtual reality games distort the real world.
