Dirigida por Alex Proyas y protagonizada por Nicolas Cage, la película arranca en octubre de 1959, durante la inauguración de un colegio de Lexington, Massachusetts. Los alumnos participan en un concurso de dibujos sobre cómo será el futuro. Lucinda Embry, una de las niñas, llena su hoja de números mientras oye voces susurrantes, y su profesora le recoge el papel antes de que termine.
