Yuri Orlov works at a restaurant in Brighton Beach, the New York neighborhood where his family lives after emigrating from the Soviet Union. One morning, he witnesses a shootout between Russian mobsters on the street and reaches a conclusion: people will always need guns, just as they need food. That idea becomes the starting point for a new business. He wants to make money selling weapons rather than earning a waiter's salary. Thanks to a contact he meets through his father's synagogue, he lands his first deals and begins operating in the international black market. Andrew Niccol directs the film, and Nicolas Cage plays a protagonist who narrates his own decisions in voice-over. The opening shows how a man with no fortune discovers that arms dealing is the only way left for him to get ahead.
