Love. Expulsion. Revolution.

Max Fischer is a scholarship student, fifteen years old, who takes part in numerous extracurricular activities at Rushmore, a private school in Houston. His grades, however, don't keep up. His middle-class background contrasts with the affluent lives of most of his classmates, and that fuels his determination to make a name for himself at the school. When the headmaster, Nelson Guggenheim, places him on sudden-death academic probation, Max knows that if he fails one more subject, he will be expelled. Directed by Wes Anderson, the film opens with this tug-of-war between a determined boy eager to stand out and an institution that is beginning to keep count of his failures.

Trivia about Rushmore

The character of Margaret Yang was going to wear a wooden finger, lost in a science experiment. The idea was dropped, but Anderson later revisited it in The Royal Tenenbaums, where Margot does have a wooden finger.
Anderson wanted the soundtrack to feature only songs by The Kinks, but while listening to other British Invasion tracks during the shoot, only one of them ended up in the film.
Bill Murray agreed to work for scale, which Anderson estimated at around 9,000 dollars. He did it because he loved the script so much that Anderson's agent recommended it to him.
Casting directors considered 1,800 teenagers from the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom for the role of Max Fischer before choosing Jason Schwartzman, then the drummer for the band Phantom Planet.
