Spain conquered the New World for gold. 500 years later, water is gold. Not much has changed...

Costa, a skeptical film producer, and Sebastián, a young and idealistic director, work together on an ambitious project: a film about the Spanish arrival in the Americas. With a limited budget, Costa decides to shoot it in Bolivia, the poorest country in South America, and the crew sets up in Cochabamba with the cast. The film will focus on the brutality of the conquest and on the courage of some priests who confronted it with words. Neither of them imagines that a challenge awaits them there that will test their convictions. That challenge comes with the Water War, which begins to erupt in the region while the shoot moves forward.

Trivia about Even the Rain

The shoot brought together 4,000 extras in total, about 300 of them Indigenous, with a crew of 130 people and more than 70 locations, almost all of them outdoors.
In September 2010, it was chosen over Celda 211, directed by Daniel Monzón and also starring Luis Tosar, as Spain's entry for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film.
It is Icíar Bollaín's fifth feature film and the first she did not write herself. It is based on a screenplay by Paul Laverty, a frequent Ken Loach screenwriter and the father of his three children.
Critic Stephen Holden of the New York Times wondered to what extent the filmmakers exploited the extras recruited to play 16th-century Indigenous people.
