Simon and Robyn Callem, a young married couple, leave Chicago to settle in Los Angeles, Simon's hometown, after he landed a new job there. Both plan to start a family in their new home. One day, while shopping at a mall, they run into Gordon "Gordo" Moseley, a former high school classmate of Simon's. The encounter seems casual, but Gordo starts sending them gifts, including koi fish for the house's pond. Robyn doesn't see any problem with it, while Simon feels uneasy. Directed and written by Joel Edgerton, the film stars Jason Bateman and Rebecca Hall.

Trivia about The Gift

Edgerton didn't start shooting his scenes as an actor until two weeks after filming began, a period he spent only directing. Meanwhile, his brother Nash assisted him behind the camera.

Most of the filming took place in a house in the Hollywood Hills, which STX Entertainment also used for the film's promotional interviews.

STX Entertainment changed the film's title to The Gift when it bought U.S. distribution rights on January 20, 2015.

Critics noted that Bateman, known for playing serious men in comedies, took on the role of a mean-spirited character, which was a departure from his usual work.

"The Gift" grossed 58,980,521 dollars worldwide on a budget of five million, according to the figures recorded for the film in 2015.

Filming was completed in 25 days and used Arri Alexa cameras with Canon K35 lenses, a technical choice documented by director of photography Eduard Grau.

The film received a Directors Guild of America nomination for Outstanding Directorial Achievement in a First-Time Feature Film for Edgerton.
