Synopsis of Barbarians

Barbarians is set in Germania Magna, the region between the Rhine and the Elbe, in the final years of the year 9 AD. Rome has occupied the territory for about twenty years, subjecting the Germanic tribes to heavy taxes and tribute demands. The tribes are divided: their chieftains fight among themselves over minor rivalries, and some men prefer peace with the Empire. Arminius, raised as a hostage in Rome and now an officer in the Imperial army, returns to his homeland to help Varus, his adoptive father, keep order. His path crosses those of Thusnelda and Folkwin, also Germanic, and each must decide which side they are on. The series was created by Arne Nolting, Jan Martin Scharf and Andreas Heckmann, streams on Netflix and stars Laurence Rupp.

Trivia about Barbarians

The first season set a record for a Netflix series in a language other than English, with more than 37 million viewers in its first four weeks.

When the series premiered, Netflix advertised in Bielefeld with the slogan "Nobody conquers the Teutoburg Forest," a nod to chants by the soccer club DSC Arminia Bielefeld.

Austrian director Barbara Eder directed the first four episodes, and Irish director Steve St. Leger, who had previously worked on Vikings, directed the last two.

Filming took place in Budapest between August 12 and November 30, 2019, and the creators consulted historians to ensure historical accuracy.

The series was renewed for a second season on November 10, 2020, shortly after its premiere.

Archaeologist Sascha Priester warned that the title could be misleading, because the Romans, supposed bearers of civilization, were highly violent and barbaric.

The series received one nomination and one win at the 2021 German Television Academy Awards: Charlotte Chang and Katharina de Malotki won for makeup, while the production was also nominated for other awards.

The second season added Daniel Donskoy, Murathan Muslu, Cynthia Micas, Katharina Heyer, Giovanni Carta and Alessandro Fella, and expanded the story to twelve episodes in total.
