Synopsis of Primal

In an anachronistic and fantastical prehistoric world, a caveman named Spear and a tyrannosaur named Fang lose their respective families at the hands of the same predator. The tragedy bonds them, and they decide to travel together. Spear is a formidable hunter, and Fang is a creature of unusual intelligence, two very different beings who must learn to trust each other. Their goal is to survive in a hostile environment full of dinosaurs, prehistoric mammals and other dangerous animals. Along the way they encounter a diverse range of wildlife and people who also inhabit this world. The series, created by Genndy Tartakovsky, airs on Adult Swim and explores an unlikely relationship between a man and a dinosaur.

Trivia about Primal

Tartakovsky disowned Primal as one of his early works because he was not satisfied with it at the time. He later wanted to experiment with his artistic strengths, such as dialogue-free animation.

Tartakovsky feared that audiences would not take the series seriously, because in his view he was breaking the rules by putting a man and a dinosaur in the same story.

The series has won three Emmy Awards: Genndy Tartakovsky for Outstanding Storyboard Artist, Scott Wills as Art Director and Stephen DeStefano as Character Designer.

On Rotten Tomatoes, the series has an approval rating of 100% based on reviews from 23 critics.

The third season premiered on January 11, 2026 on Adult Swim and arrived on HBO Max the next day, almost four years after the second season aired.

Tartakovsky decided to bring Spear back to life after concluding that his death had come too soon; the idea began as a joke and ended up becoming the basis for the third season.
