Brendan Hines was born in Baltimore during the summer of 1976. Before television cameras noticed his face, he spent years playing New York stages with a guitar slung over his shoulder. He wasn't chasing the easy applause of the mass audience.
In 2009 his career took a decisive turn with the premiere of Lie to Me. He played Eli Loker, a man who practiced radical honesty and refused to lie in a world where deception was the currency. That role brought him immediate international visibility, which he handled without losing his bearings.
The show ran for three seasons. But Hines didn't settle for being the charismatic supporting player of a procedural.
Then came the characters with a double edge.
During 2014, he joined the cast of Suits to bring Logan Sanders to life. It was a complicated role, a resourceful businessman moving through a rather blurry ethical zone. Hines has a natural ability to seem both polite and menacing at the same time.
Before that project, he had already worked on the set of Scandal in 2012. On those fast-paced shoots, he learned that industrial television waits for no one. His technique became drier and more precise, erasing any trace of overacting.
He never needed to be the center of the story to carry the weight of a scene.
In 2016, he took on the challenge of The Tick. He played Superian, a melancholy and somewhat pathetic take on the Superman myth, which allowed him to explore sarcasm. It was a risky bet that paid off thanks to his command of comic timing.
Music is not a hobby for him. In 2007, he released Good For You Know Who, a folk album with sharp lyrics reminiscent of the classic singer-songwriters of the 1970s. Hines writes about urban loneliness and everyday absurdity with a clarity that is rare among actors who try their luck in the music industry.
He recorded Small Town Songs in 2012 with a minimalist production. In his live shows, he often performs solo with just his guitar and a harmonica, steering clear of sonic artifice. His third album, titled Qualms, hit the market in 2017 and confirmed that his music career has its own identity, fully independent of his Hollywood contracts.
Music is his way of taking back creative control.
He joined the world of Locke & Key in 2021 to play Josh Bennett. Filming the second and third seasons in Toronto demanded serious physical discipline because of Canada's weather. In 2022, he joined the cast of the series The Watcher for Netflix.
Production on the final episodes of his series for the streaming platform wrapped in May 2022, with a budget of six million dollars per episode.
