Daiki Yamashita was born in Shizuoka in 1989 with a clear goal of pursuing singing and musicals. But the realities of the Japanese industry pushed him toward voice acting booths after he trained at the Japan Narration Acting Institute. In 2012, he landed his first supporting roles in productions such as Little Battlers Experience.
It was a quiet start.
In 2013, his career took a turn when he landed the lead role of Sakamichi Onoda in Yowamushi Pedal. This character, an amateur cyclist devoted to otaku culture, demanded a high-pitched register and a very specific vulnerability. He won the Best Breakthrough Actor award at the eighth Seiyuu Awards in 2014 for this role.
The year 2016 marked his definitive breakthrough with the TV anime adaptation of My Hero Academia. Voicing Izuku Midoriya takes a real physical toll, since the script calls for constant shouts of effort and crying under extreme emotional pressure. Yamashita often records these sessions with such intensity that sound engineers have to keep adjusting input levels.
And the gamble paid off.
In 2018, he moved away from purely heroic characters by voicing Narancia Ghirga in JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Golden Wind. Here he dropped his usual innocence to explore a more aggressive and erratic tone. He got through 120 recording sessions just to cover the combat arcs of that season.
Starting in 2019, he joined the Pokémon franchise to bring Goh to life. The role kept him busy on a recurring basis until 2022 and gave him the chance to work on one of the most profitable productions in Japanese television. He never abandoned niche projects, though, and in 2020 he took part in The Millionaire Detective Balance: Unlimited.
Technique won out over raw talent.
During 2024, he reprised his lead role in the seventh season of My Hero Academia and appeared in the feature film My Hero Academia: You’re Next. During that same period, he worked on the series Blue Box, voicing Kyo Kasahara. He has remained with the agency Arts Vision since his professional debut, without changing representation in more than twelve years.
The production of Uzumaki in 2024 closed out its annual recording schedule with a sound budget above the industry average.
